Behind-the-Scenes Look: Baymeadows Movers Teams Up with Chipman and OMA to Haul Away Legacy Equipment from AMC Theatres
Most moviegoers walk into a movie theater thinking about the movie they're there to watch. They see the giant screen, cozy seats, and maybe the smell of fresh popcorn. What they don't see is all that unfolds behind the scenes to deliver that experience—or what it takes when it's time to phase out decades of gear and make room for the future.
Recently, Baymeadows Movers was able to partner with Chipman Relocation & Logistics on a unique commercial moving project via our membership in the Office Moving Alliance (OMA). As a team, we supported the removal of legacy projection equipment from several AMC Theatre locations. It wasn't your typical commercial move. It called for careful planning, specialized equipment, experienced crews, and seamless coordination between trusted relocation partners.
Moves like these are among the reasons we love what we do. No two commercial moves are ever exactly alike, and that's what makes our work rewarding.
Every Commercial Move Has a Story
Among the finest parts of commercial moving is the variety.
One week we're moving an entire school before students come back for the new year. The next we're transporting physical therapy equipment to a new healthcare facility. Next we find ourselves inside a movie theater, methodically taking apart and hauling out equipment that has entertained millions of people over the years.
This AMC project was especially memorable because it involved removing large digital cinema projection systems, together with several pieces of historic 35mm projection equipment. Walking into the projection booths felt like stepping back in time. Some of the film projectors and reels had been part of the movie-going experience long before digital projection had become the industry norm.
For film fans, it was fascinating.
For our crew, it was a reminder that every piece of equipment we move has its own story.
Great Projects Start with Thoughtful Planning
Projects like this do not begin when the moving truck arrives.
Long before the first projector is disconnected, our team carefully coordinates logistics, scheduling, entry points, equipment requirements, manpower, and safety planning.
Partnering with Chipman Relocation & Logistics, we managed every phase of the project to ensure each theater could be completed efficiently and safely. One of the top benefits of being part of the Office Moving Alliance (OMA) is having access to a nationwide network of seasoned commercial movers who share the same dedication to professionalism and customer service. By pairing Chipman's national relocation expertise with Baymeadows Movers' local knowledge and project management experience, we were able to carry out the work seamlessly from start to finish.
Movie theaters weren't designed with equipment removal in mind.
Projection rooms are often tucked away on upper levels with narrow hallways, snug doorways, and limited access. A few locations have elevators, while others don't. Transporting large projection systems through those spaces involves much more than simply putting them on a dolly and heading for the truck.
Each challenge must be foreseen before work even begins.
That's where experience truly matters.
It's All About More Than Just Muscle
It's often assumed that moving heavy equipment is purely about brute strength.
The reality is that commercial moving is about preparation and planning, technique, and having the right tools for the job.
Undertakings like the AMC equipment removal demand specialized dollies, rigging equipment, lift systems, protective materials, and skilled crews who know how to safely maneuver oversized equipment through tight spaces.
Each projector had to be meticulously disconnected, protected, maneuvered through the building, and carefully loaded for transport.
Many of these systems are not only heavy—they're also remarkably delicate. A single careless bump into a doorway or uneven transition could result in significant damage.
Patience and communication are every bit as important as strength.
Safeguarding the Building Is Every Bit as Important
While our focus is on safely relocating equipment, we're equally focused on safeguarding the customer's facility.
Commercial buildings represent a substantial investment, and even small repairs can prove expensive and disruptive.
When a job is complete, our goal is for customers to remember how smoothly everything went, not the moving process itself.
Working Together Makes the Difference
Sizable commercial moving projects are not a single-person task.
Each member of the crew has a role, and communication is key from beginning to end.
One team member may be guiding equipment through a doorway while another manages the load. Someone else is watching clearances, while another crew member is prepping the next piece for transport.
When experienced crews work as a team, there is a rhythm that takes shape. That's something that can't be taught overnight.
Watching our crew work together was a clear example of what happens when veteran movers share the same dedication to safety, communication, and customer service.
A Little Levity Along the Way
Even during challenging commercial projects, it's essential to appreciate the experience.
Working inside movie theaters certainly had its perks.
Our guys couldn't resist slipping downstairs for a few movie snacks between tasks on the project. Having spent the day behind the scenes where few people ever get to go, popcorn for some reason tasted even better.
Such moments make long workdays memorable and remind us that while we take our work seriously, we also have fun doing it.
Commercial Moving Is More Than Just Transportation
Most people believe moving companies simply load trucks and unload them somewhere else.
Commercial moving is much more than that.
These engagements often involve logistics planning, inventory management, warehousing, project management, scheduling, handling of specialized equipment, and coordinating multiple contractors.
Each customer has different needs.
Certain businesses must relocate hundreds of employees across a single weekend.
Others need sensitive medical equipment relocated without disruption.
Certain projects happen overnight to minimize downtime.
Others—like the AMC project—involve carefully removing specialized equipment from unique environments.
Every move calls for flexibility, preparation, and problem solving.
Here at Baymeadows Movers, when somebody asks, "Can you help with this?" our first thought is almost always, "Let's figure out how."
Real Experience Builds Confidence
For decades, Baymeadows Movers has been proudly serving Jacksonville and Northeast Florida, and we've found that smooth projects all rely on the same core principles:
Preparation.
Communication.
Professionalism.
Trust.
Our customers know we'll come ready, keep them informed throughout the project, handle their property with care, and solve problems rather than create them.
Whether we're working inside schools, hospitals, office buildings, warehouses, government facilities, entertainment venues, or commercial campuses, our approach doesn't change.
Protect the customer.
Protect the equipment.
Complete the work safely.
Leave the site better than we found it.
Protecting a Piece of Movie History
One of the unforeseen highlights of this project was seeing some of the original 35mm projection systems that once brought so many movies to life.
Well before streaming services and digital cinema, these machines produced memorable experiences for generations of moviegoers.
Standing beside them gave our crew a true appreciation for how much technology has evolved over the years.
It's not every day that a moving company has the opportunity to help retire a small piece of entertainment history.
Personally, it truly was a moment we'll never forget.
